Our latest fashion advice is based on scientific evidence! A study has shown that the more decisions we make in a day, the worse those decisions are likely to get. So your decision making powers are at their peak for the first decision of the day, and the choice of what to wear is normally the first item on the day’s agenda. So we are focussing our prime mental energies on basic stuff to do with how to keep warm and look good!
When Baraq Obama came to power, he was not only faced with this daily dilemma, but also mindful of the need to make good decisions as President of the United States. In order to focus his powers on important decisions, he first decided to jettison every suit in his wardrobe that was not black or blue and every shirt or tie that was not white or pale blue. So each morning he would only have to make a choice between a black suit or a blue suit.
Brilliant! But hold on, could you live on a diet of Black and Blue? No? How about black and white? Black, after all, is the ultimate in smart and serious, while white is the colour of summer and angels. Monochrome has many smart antecedents in the animal world. Look at the dapper penguin, the sleek border collie, the smart magpie. And why do some dinner invitations suggest the mean wear ‘black tie’? So that they all turn up looking good!
But there are simply loads of other advantages to black and white. Firstly, there are no shades of black, so everything you buy that is black will go with everything else you own that is black. There are shades of white, but this doesn’t matter. They all go with one another and they all go with black.
Black and white are great for looking good on formal occasions, so you will never have to worry on that count. Just make sure that you mix them together to avoid upstaging the bride at weddings. They are also the perfect for interviews – dress all in white if you want to be remembered!
If you are still not convinced, it’s worth noting that black and white are hugely fashionable this year, so there is oodles of wonderful stuff to choose from in the shops, though so far I have been finding enough joy in charity shops. Where once I used to gaze numbly at the rails of clashing colours, now I hone in on my two favourite shades like a well-trained honey bee. And as black and white never go out of style, every penny will be invested in a future of easy wardrobe decisions.
And if you decide to just season your existing wardrobe with some salt and pepper, make sure you have the following:
- A black tux jacket – make it trendy by wearing it with plimsols
- A long black or white evening dress – to be worn with ultra-plain open-toed sandals
- An oversize white shirt – for that cool Parisienne look
- Skin tight black tight corduroy jeans – they glow like velvet
- A white cashmere cardigan – goes with everything on a summer evening
- White jeans – to move and feel like Jagger
When it comes to shoes, almost every style comes in either black or white, so your foot style will never be cramped. And you need never think again about whether your new shoes are going to match an existing outfit.
But equally, if you are tempted to go off piste and buy some red shoes, they will be the quirky piece of colour that offsets your monochrome outfit. The same goes for neck scarves. And hats. And sunglasses. And handbags. And just about all accessories, many of which we already own but have somehow neglected. And all this should add up to an easy going summer wardrobe.
